Western Australia is huge! There is so much to see. If you are planning on doing some walking in Western Australia, here is our guide on when to walk where.
Autumn is a great time for walking in Western Australia’s south west. Anywhere on the Bibbulmun track below Dwellingup is going to be great, as well as the Cape to Cape Track and the Stirling Ranges. There isn’t the range of wildflowers that spring offers, but the weather is much more predictable and mornings are nearly as cold. If you are doing the Cape to Cape, you can avoid having to do the river crossings by doing it in autumn.
Winter is time to head north in Western Australia. Late May through to July is a fabulous time to be in the Kimberley and June/July is the best time to be in Pilbara. You will still get some warm days, but there is still going to be plenty of water around an lots of green.
The walks in the Perth hills can be great in winter as well as the wheat belt and goldfields.
Spring starts in Western Australia in the mid west around Kalbarri in August and spreads its way south. The Perth area is wonderful in September as is the Cape to Cape in Margaret River and the Stirling Ranges. The inland walks in the Jarrah and Karri forest are ablaze with colour in October and are just stunning.
The great southern area near Denmark and Albany start to hit their straps in late October/early November, but they can also be great all the way up to early December depending on the year.
Summer is tough in Western Australia. The southern coast is really the only place that we would recommend but be careful and check the forecast. The walks around Walpole in the tingle forest are better than the highly exposed walks on the coast. Take lots of water and start early!
We choose to do paddling trips at this time of year more than walks so we are never too far away from a refreshing dip.
