The Abrolhos Islands, graveyard of the Batavia

Posted on

The Abrolhos Islands are a cluster of 122 coral reefs and islands located off the coast of Western Australia. They are a popular tourist destination, known for their stunning coral formations, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life. But the Abrolhos Islands also have a dark history, as they are the site of one of the most infamous shipwrecks in Australian history: the Batavia.

The Batavia was a Dutch East India Company ship that was carrying a crew of 341 and a cargo of silver and other valuable goods when it set sail from the Netherlands in October 1628. The ship was bound for the Dutch colony of Batavia (now Jakarta), in what is now Indonesia. However, the Batavia never made it to its destination. Instead, it ran aground on a reef in the Abrolhos Islands in June 1629.

The survivors of the shipwreck faced a brutal ordeal. Among them were Jeronimus Cornelisz, a high-ranking official on board the Batavia, who quickly emerged as a charismatic and ruthless leader. Cornelisz and his followers soon began a reign of terror, murdering more than 100 men, women, and children in a bid to seize control of the limited resources available on the island.

The killings eventually came to an end when a group of soldiers from the Batavia’s crew arrived on the island and restored order. Cornelisz and his accomplices were tried and executed for their crimes, and the survivors were eventually rescued and returned to Batavia.

Today, the Abrolhos Islands are a popular destination for divers and snorkelers, who can explore the wrecks of the Batavia and other ships that have met their fate on the treacherous reefs surrounding the islands. The wreck of the Batavia is considered to be one of the most significant shipwrecks in Australian history, and is a popular destination for tourists and history buffs alike.

Despite the tragedy that occurred on the Abrolhos Islands in 1629, the islands are now a symbol of resilience and survival. Today, they are a reminder of the courage and determination of those who survived the Batavia shipwreck, and of the importance of remembering the lessons of the past. If you ever get the chance to visit the Abrolhos Islands, take the opportunity to explore the history and beauty of this unique and fascinating destination.
