Five Must-See Scenic Highlights Along the Bibbulmun Track

Posted on

The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world’s premier long-distance walking trails, stretching 1,000 kilometres from the outskirts of Perth in Kalamunda to the historic town of Albany on the south coast. Winding through the heart of Western Australia’s scenic southwest, the track takes you through towering forests, tranquil inlets, and rugged coastlines.

Here are our five must-see scenic highlights in the Southern section of this iconic trail

1. Conspicuous Cliff

For a taste of the wild Southern Ocean, few places along the Bibbulmun Track can match the sheer drama of Conspicuous Cliff. Here, the track meanders along towering limestone cliffs that plunge dramatically into the waters below. It’s a place that stirs the soul (and dishevels the hair), where the relentless power of the ocean meets the resilience of the land.

The smell of salt in the air, the roar of waves crashing against the rocks, and the sight of endless ocean stretching to the horizon is both invigorating and humbling.

2. The Giant Trees of the Tingle Forest

The Tingle Forest, near Walpole, is home to some of the tallest and oldest trees in Australia, and walking amongst these ancient giants is an experience like no other. The trees here, known as red tingle, can reach heights of up to 75 metres and diameters of up to 20 metres, making them some of the largest eucalypts in the world.

As you wander through the forest, the air feels cool and fresh, carrying the earthy scent of damp leaves. Sunlight trickles through the thick canopy, and each step on the soft ground feels like a journey into the past. It’s the kind of place that naturally makes you slow down, pause, and appreciate the beauty and calm around you.

3. West Cape Howe National Park

Located on the southernmost tip of Western Australia, West Cape Howe National Park is a magnet for wildlife chasers on the Bibbulmun Track. It has a showcase of biodiversity, with its dramatic coastal cliffs, pristine beaches, and lush heathlands.

Spring transforms the park into a colourful tapestry of wildflowers, with species like banksias, bottlebrush, and kangaroo paws. The park’s diverse ecosystems support a variety of native wildlife, from kangaroos and echidnas to an array of birdlife, including the striking red-tailed black cockatoo.

Beyond its flora and fauna, West Cape Howe offers breathtaking views from its towering cliffs, which plunge into the waters of the Southern Ocean. Shelley Beach and Dunsky Beach provide secluded spots for a peaceful rest from walking, while the gentle hills and easy-to-reach lookouts make for perfect picnic spots with great views.

4. William Bay – Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks

William Bay National Park, near Denmark, is renowned for its beauty. Greens Pool is a tranquil, sheltered lagoon with crystal-clear turquoise water, perfect for a refreshing swim. The calm waters, protected by large granite boulders, make it ideal for relaxing and snorkelling.

Just a short walk away is Elephant Rocks, where massive, rounded boulders resemble a herd of elephants wading through the shallows. It’s a unique spot, and combined with the beautiful coastal scenery, it’s the perfect place to take some photos and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

 5. Lilacs Section of the Bibbulmun Track

The Lilacs section of the Bibbulmun Track is a beautiful and scenic part of the trail, located near Albany at the southern terminus of the track. It offers walkers stunning views along the picturesque Princess Royal Harbour, and serves as an ideal starting point for those exploring this iconic long-distance walk.

The journey begins at the Southern Terminus in Albany and follows the coastline, providing a taste of scenery to come. The short walk to Lilacs is perfect for warming up and taking in the surroundings before venturing further along the track. As you make your way toward Torndirrup National Park and the Albany Wind Farm, keep an eye out for the region’s unique wildflowers (in Spring) and enjoy the striking views of the Southern Ocean.
