The best time to walk the Cape to Cape track is March-May (autumn) or September-November (spring). The weather is fairly mild at these times with temperatures in the high teens and low 20’s. As there is very little shade on the Cape to Cape track, avoid temperatures in excess of 28 degrees. March can be hot as can November, so it is best to pick the right week.
The questions of when to walk the Cape to Cape track is dependent on what you want to see.
If you are interested in seeing wildflowers, the best time to walk the Cape to Cape track is mid September to mid October. The wildflowers start in late August and go through to early November however the peak is at the beginning of October.
April and May tend to have the best weather but there are no wildflowers at that time. The water is still warm though, you can still go for a swim at that time.
Early November is the best time to walk the Cape to Cape track if you would like to see whales. They are found off the coast in huge numbers in late October and early November.
June to August are very wet and cold and the river crossings become unpredictable and some times even dangerous. In most years it is possible to cross the Margaret River from the middle of September, though in 2016 we could not cross it until October. Avoid June to August if you can. Early September can be glorious or it can be terrible!
Ultimately when to the walk the Cape to Cape track comes down to when you have time. Many people walk the track over summer and have a great time, so don’t let us put you off if your only option is to walk the trail in February. Just remember to bring a hat!
