Mt Rufus is one of those every challenging walks whose rewards easily match, if not exceed, the experience of what you’ll receive at the end. We asked one of our guides the inside scoop of what someone might expect tackling Mt Rufus, located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania.
Embarking on the Mt Rufus trek is not for the faint-hearted, but oh, the rewards are plentiful! This tough loop hike stretches across a challenging 21km, demanding at least 7 hours of your grit and gusto. The trail beckons with a steady, and sometimes, steep ascent leading to the summit. But once there, you are greeted with a view so spectacular, it instantly makes every step worthwhile!
On the way down, you’ll navigate through a gentle walk in a narrow valley, followed by a somewhat steep descent through a lush wet rainforest. Walkers will come to a boggy wetland crossing, but a raised boardwalk has got you covered!
Shadow Lake appears in the nick of time as the perfect spot for a much-needed afternoon rest-stop, before the anticipation builds for the final push to the serene Lake St Clair. For those looking to cut the Rufus loop, there’s an option to cross to Shadow lake about halfway up the ascent, conveniently shaving off around 7-8 km from the hike and about 400m of elevation.
However, a word to the wise – if travelling with one of our guided tours, after taking the turn-off to the Shadowlake link track and commencing the serious climb to the summit, turning back isn’t really an option.
Due to the remote location and safety, the licence for tour operators in Tasmanian Parks requires guests to be accompanied by guides – especially crucial given the walk’s difficulty and remoteness. Reaching the summit is a feat we achieve about half the time during our Central Highlands Tasmania Walking Tour.
We only embark on the summit if our guests are reasonably fit, with appropriate clothing for the conditions, and if the weather is clear or mostly clear, or only a light rain. If it’s snowing, the summit is a no-go. It’s a bit like going to a barbie – you wouldn’t show up in a snowstorm without a jacket, right?

Here at Inspiration Outdoors, we believe in tackling the steep bits on the way up. Why? It’s much easier to trip or fall on slippery and unsteady rocks going downhill! We wouldn’t want our lovely guests taking an unexpected tumble now, would we? Safety is our priority, especially in the remote, breathtaking landscapes of Tasmania. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of uphill challenge?
We have a great blog on Bushwalking Safety Tips. This is the perfect companion read on safety.
Conquering the challenges of Mt Rufus isn’t just about the physical trek; it’s about the feeling of achievement, sharing camaraderie with fellow trekkers, and of course taking in the breathtaking vistas of Tasmania make every step (and every steep climb!) worth it.
Now, it’s your turn to write your own adventure story! Are you ready to step into your hiking boots, feel the crunch of the earth beneath your feet, and breathe in the crisp, Tasmanian air? We promise, the memories you’ll create and the sights you’ll witness are like no other – and we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
