Itinerary

It's an early start this morning as we make our way to Windjana (Bandilngan). There is a bit of driving today but the scenery is like no other, passing Boab trees (including the famous Prison Tree) and vast savannah woodlands interspersed with giant and unusual termite mounds.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, Windjana Campground

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Today we have a full day to explore the Windjana National Park. We will take an easy stroll into Windjana Gorge where we can see the original Great Barrier Reef. There are always plenty of fresh water crocs to see here but no swimming. After lunch back at camp we will drive to Tunnel Creek ( Dimalurru). Here we will venture into the tunnel and wade through the water to the other side.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, Windjana Campground

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We head through the Napier Range visiting Bell Creek Gorge with its many rock pools, rapids and a waterfall. This is a spectacular spot for a swim and one of the most photographed waterholes in the Kimberley.

After a good amount of time exploring, we will drive on to our next campsite at Mt Barnett Station on the banks of the Manning Creek.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, Manning Gorge Campground (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 - Windjana to Mt Barnett Station

Leaving early from our campsite, we follow an open, beautiful walk trail to Manning Gorge and Falls. Swim, relax and soak in the atmosphere while you enjoy morning tea, carried in by your guides.

We will head back to the campsite for lunch. For those looking for a relaxed afternoon, it is time to read a book under a boab tree and perhaps another swim in the creek nearby to the camp.

For those looking to explore, there are a few gorges within striking distance, so we can take a drive out to explore one of them.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping - Manning Gorge Campground (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy the scenery and a true blue 'Gibb River Road massage' today on this mostly driving day. The typical Kimberley scenery includes the Pentecost River Lookout, which overlooks the river floodplain and the tabletop Cockburn Ranges beyond. We'll cross the Durack River and pass the site of the old Durack River Homestead, destroyed by flood in 2002.

Dinner is not included tonight so you can enjoy the restaurants of El Questro.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, El Questro (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

During these two days there are plenty of walking and swimming options that we can undertake at El Questro. These include Amalia Gorge, Emma Gorge & El Questro Gorge walks. Plus, we'll enjoy a luxuriant soak in Zebedee Thermal Springs.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, El Questro (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 - El Questro Station

Another full day to explore the beautiful El Questro area, including an optional cruise on Chamberlain Gorge if anyone wants an easy afternoon.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping, El Questro (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we head for Kununurra, visiting the Ramsar wetland Parry Lagoons on the way - a wonderful spot to view masses of waterbirds. There will be time in the afternoon to catch up on washing, postcards or just to relax. The crew will be organising the fresh food for the next section of the trip.

Dinner is not included tonight to give you the opportunity to taste some local delights.

Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

It won't take long for us to have a look around the town, however Mirima National Park which is known locally as the "mini Bungles" is well worth a visit.

For those who would like, there is the option to take a boat trip up the Ord River with Triple J Cruises. This will need to be booked prior to departure.

Lunch and Dinner are not included in today's itinerary.

Accommodation: The Cambridge, Kununurra (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 - Kununurra and Lake Argyle

This morning we leave Kununurra and head for Purnululu National Park - one of only three natural World Heritage sites in Western Australia. The 53 kilometre 4wd road into the park is our reintroduction to outback tracks with creek crossings, wash aways and rough slow sections. After setting up camp, we can go for a stroll and watch the sun set against the red rock of the Bungle Bungle Range - bring a drink if you like!

Accommodation: Comfortable Camping, Purnululu National Park Campsite (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We spend the next two days exploring the natural wonders of the park including Echidna Chasm, Mini Palms Gorge, the spectacular orange and black 'beehive' domes, Piccanniny Creek and Cathedral Gorge.

There is time during our stay for an optional helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range - a fantastic way to see and appreciate this completely unique and beautiful landscape.

Accommodation: Comfortable Camping, Purnululu National Park campsite (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We will spend the morning in Purnululu National Park. You'll be welcomed to country by your local guide from Kingfisher Tours and then head off on the walking trail. Heading through the Domes you'll learn about bush tucker and bush medicine. Continuing on into Cathedral Gorge your guide will tell the tales of how Countrymen would walk the country you are walking. As you enter the majestic gorge your guide will share the space with you in their cultural way, whether that be through drawing or singing or story telling.

Afterwards it is about a 5 hour drive to Larrawa Station, where we will have our final night of the tour.

Important Notes

  • This is a camping tour with lots of comfort. (As we like to say it’s a camping tour for non campers!) Each person will have the use of their own semi permanent tent and a comfy camping bed. Even if you are travelling with a friend or a significant other you will have access to your own tent or you are more than welcome to share. You will need to bring a pillow and sleeping bag or you can hire a sleeping bag from us, just let us know.
  • Start & End Times: Pick-up in the morning of day 1 will be from Broome Time Resort at 7:30am. The trip finishes on arrival back into Broome on the last day at around 5pm.
  • Itinerary Changes : Please note that this tour runs in the dry season which is the best and only time of the year to see the Kimberley. Nonetheless, there are instances where the wet season might influence the accessibility of stations and campgrounds. At the time of publishing, our preferred option for nights 1 and 2, Windjana Gorge Campground, was closed due to the ongoing impact of flooding in 2023. The itinerary has been published with our alternate option (Mt Hart) for these nights, however we reserve the right to change to Windjana Gorge, should it become available.
  • First Day Info: The first day is a travel day out to Windjana Gorge. Please wear comfortable clothing as we will be visiting a few places along the way. Once we get to Windjana we will set up camp for the next 2 nights.
  • Fitness: There will be extensive walking on diverse landscapes, such as crossing through water and climbing over rocks. The walks are short and most of the longer ones allow you to go as far as you like before you turn back. While we take it slow, travellers are encouraged to make sure they have a good level of fitness and mobility coming into the tour. We will provide you with some training tips!
  • Weather: Temperatures on this tour can be extreme, ranging from very cold at night to very hot during the day. Please bring appropriate clothing, use sun protection and drink plenty of water. We always recommend lots of layers to shed or add on and make sure you have warm clothing for during the evenings.
  • Big travel distances: The beauty of the Kimberley is that you can travel for long distances without seeing anyone but it also means it will take time to get to each spot. Sit back and enjoy the ride, we’ve crafted our itinerary so that you will be out exploring as much as you can.
  • Meals: All meals are provided apart from Dinner on day 8 and 9, and Lunch on Day 9.
  • In the event of unforeseeable circumstances that require a modification to the itinerary or accommodation, we will make every effort to provide a suitable alternative.

Kimberley Tour FAQs

How hard are the walks on this tour?

The walks in the Kimberley are not particularly difficult. Some are quite rocky underfoot however none are particularly long, so we can afford to take our time. Most of the walks include an opportunity to swim in a beautiful water hole.

Posted in: Kimberley Tour FAQs

I have never put up a tent before. Is it hard? Will you help?

Modern tents are very quick and easy to erect. We all pitch in and help each other and generally each tent is up within 10 minutes.

Posted in: Kimberley Tour FAQs

Do I have to share a tent?

No. We have a three person tent for each person. The tents are large enough for most people to stand fully erect and there is room enough to put a stretcher bed (which we provide) as well as all of your gear. If you are travelling as a couple, they tents are still big enough for two.

What will the weather be like?

April – August is the best time to visit the Kimberley. There is lots of water in the swimming holes and waterfalls and the chance of getting rain is much reduced. During wet season all the parks in the Kimberley close and then reopen again once the waters reside in late March/early April. The days will be warm and evenings mild. However it can get very cold in the Bungle Bungles at night so make sure you pack your thermals! There is lots of refreshing swims on this tour, so it is not hard to cool off.

Why do we camp on the Kimberley tour? Don’t all of your other tours stay in accommodation?

If we could stay in accommodation we would, however it would mean a lot of driving. The Kimberley is an enormous place and if you don’t want to spend your whole tour in the bus, it means you have to camp.

About Walking Tours In General

How hard are the walks?

The difficulty of the walks ranges from tour to tour, from easy to challenging. We design all of our walking tours to be achievable for those with a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend doing some training before most tours, because physical activity is always more enjoyable if you are physically prepared. We will send you information about how to train when you book.

When on tour we find that a positive mental attitude is most important and that if you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, and not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. You can always have a day or sometimes an afternoon off to relax if you feel like it. If you have any concerns about your fitness or ability to complete a walk, give us a call or send us an email and we can talk you through it.

Do I have to twin-share accommodation? Can I have my own room?

Our tour prices are based on rooms being twin share (two single beds in one room) or double (one double/queen bed in a room, shared by a couple). If you are travelling alone, we will place you in a room with someone of the same gender. If you have opted for a single supplement, this means you will have your own room but we won’t always be able to guarantee your own bathroom and king/queen bed due to the types of accommodation we use for group bookings. Often we stay at 2 or 3 bedroom chalets so that we can cook and have a common area for the group to relax and mingle at the end of your days walk. If having your own bathroom is important, give us a ring and we will see if it is possible.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

Will I hold up the group if I’m a slow walker?

We find a lot of people who haven’t been on a walking tour before worry about this, but it’s rarely an issue. We keep a comfortable steady pace with plenty of opportunities to rest and take in the scenery along the way. Usually the group will spread out over a couple of hundred metres as we walk.

Normal walking pace on a formed surface like a road or footpath is around 4.5 – 6 km per hour and we tend to average just over 3 km per hour on bush tracks. It’s not a stroll but it’s not a brisk walk either. If you feel you may be slower than this, try some longer training walks to increase your walking fitness.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

What is the average age of Inspiration Outdoors’ guests?

About 80% of our walkers are aged between 45 – 75, but we welcome all adults on our tours. We get a roughly 60/40 female to male split.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General, Day Walk FAQs

What’s the food like? Can you cater for my dietary needs?

We serve simple, nutritious and delicious food on tour prepared by our guides, using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Sometimes we also eat out at restaurants. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, fresh fruit, pre-dinner nibbles and a two course evening meal are all included. We are happy to adapt our menu to suit many dietary needs including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets – please ask when you book.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

Are your walking tours just for “bushwalkers”?

Our walks are for anyone who enjoys walking and nature – bushwalkers or not. Our walks are conducted in safe, supportive and fun environments and you don’t need specialised equipment or experience to undertake them. We give you information about what you will need to bring and how you should prepare for each tour and we’re always here to answer any questions or concerns.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General, Day Walk FAQs

Do I have to walk every day on tour?

Of course not – it’s your holiday and you should do what you feel! Relax at the accommodation, come for a drive, get dropped off in town or go for a stroll of your own. On some days there is also the opportunity to walk for part of the day. This last option depends on whether there is vehicle access to the track.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

What do I have to carry when I walk?

Very little. A water bladder or bottles, lunch/snacks/fruit for the day. a rain jacket, some personal first aid supplies and, on some days, lunch. You will probably want a camera as well. We return to accommodation each evening so there is no need to carry a large backpack.
